Just Say No

Ever since we were little girls, we've been force fed the idea that our lives will one day revolve around a spouse and our children--but my question is why?  Every time I log onto Facebook it seems that yet another one of my friends has gotten engaged or tied the knot, and I just don't understand it.  Don't get me wrong, I'm all for marriage, but I just don't get why everyone my age is so marriage obsessed.  So here are my top five reasons for why I'm content to wait for marriage:

  • My parents both went through messy divorces--multiple times.  Finding love hasn't been an easy feat for either one of my parents and their messy divorces are one of the reasons for why I'm happy without being married.  It's too difficult to build a family and love people who just walk away in the end.  However, I do still believe in the institution of marriage and want to one day get married, but I want to be sure--without a shadow of a doubt--that I'm ready to be joined to that person for the rest of my life.

  • I want to discover myself.  I'm sorry, but I need to first know who I am as an individual before I add another person into the mix.

  • I need my career.  I refuse to become one of those Bluetooh wearing, career obsessed women, but I need my career BEFORE I settle down.  I'm the type of person who typically puts others before myself and I know that if I got married at twenty, I would place my husband above everything; including college.

  • Too complicated for me.  Relationships are complicated enough as is.  Why would I want to add 'til death do us part' into that?

  • I'm just too young.  I don't feel like twenty years of life experience is long enough to make a decision about being married.  I'm not emotionally or spiritually ready for a husband.
So there you go, the top five reasons for why I'm waiting to get married.  What are you opinions regarding marriage, lovely?  Should we wait until we're older or does it not really matter?

  1. Most of the time it is better to wait until we are settled and we've known that person for a good while. However, for those that have known this person and known that they are the one for a while, I say go for it. Life is different for everyone, but nothing should be rushed into and no one can make someone else happy if they don't know who they are first. Well, there's my two cents. :)
